One of my first loves: Halloween
As my first post I suppose I shall start with confessing my undying love for Halloween. It is truly the only holiday from my childhood that I carried out into my adulthood. What is it about Halloween that I love so much? Well, aside for it correlating with my Gothic interests, it’s a holiday that is really different from the other popular ones here in the U.S.A. The other holidays are fine and I have nothing against them, but this one is the only one that has been able to stay with me.
It has been such a favorite of mine that I now try to celebrate it all year round! It is a holiday that never tries to sugarcoat anything, despite all the trick-or-treating. It takes universal themes, like death and fear, into something we can face head on in a healthy way. There is also the past connection to its ancient predecessor, Samhain, which centers on honoring the dead. The holiday of Día de los Muertos is also very special to me, but I will go into greater detail for another post.
Halloween is also a time for us weirdos to feel accepted for a whole season. Plus it lies within my favorite season of the year: Autumn! It might seem odd to mention Halloween now that spring is on its way, but as someone who celebrates all year long, now it’s the time for what we Halloween-obsessed people call, “Spring-o-ween”. Some have even started the countdown to Oct. 31st. I just hope that this post can be the starting point for all those who love the strange and unusual to feel welcomed in this blog. Til next time my ghouls!
